Individualized Learning
The educational opportunities at Ed White Memorial High School are designed to address the
needs of the students who come to us from varied backgrounds. We identify the individuals strengths and
support development in those other areas.
Our aspiration is to afford
each student the opportunity to earn a diploma in a setting that is challenging, engaging,
supportive, and stimulating. Acknowledging the
diversity in learning styles in the classroom, the teaching staff provides customized
instruction. Family members and the community
are invaluable resources utilized in the classroom by our staff.
Computer Technology
Our school was awarded over $100,000 in grant funding to expand the use of computer
technology in the classroom. Every classroom
has computers providing supervised access to the internet with a school-wide computer/
student ratio of 1 to 8.
The
use of internet research is integrated into classroom instruction and supplements
traditional library research. A library
resource network is available using the internet. These
library resources include the Texas Library Connection, which provides access to library
resources throughout the state.
On-line Learning
Students have the opportunity to earn additional credits or recover lost credits using
PLATO on-line learning software. Students can
access the PLATO website from home, which allows more time on task.
Small Classes
Classes are limited to 25 students per classroom, with most classes much smaller. The result is that staff members know the names of
every student in the school. Contact between
home and school is encouraged by the use of e-mail, and teachers talk with parents often.
The
instructional day is from 8:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m., and tutorials are available daily. Our quarter system allows students to earn a
traditional semester credit in 12 weeks.
Faculty and Staff
Every member of the faculty is a degreed and/or State certified teacher and has expressed
a special desire to be a member of this staff. Our
staff members come to Ed White Memorial with diverse backgrounds and personal experiences
in fields of study such as science, literary arts, and technology, which provides an
enriching base for instruction. |
